Wind, pitching and elation
Winter Baltic Sea is hard to deal with: the cadets immediately experienced the strength of wind, waves and pitching.
Many of our 120 cadets are at sea for the first time and the Baltic offered them the first serious test: 20-meter gusts of wind and sea state force 6. As the vessel got to the open water storm guard rails were stretched. However, almost all the guys were full of enthusiasm and happy to see the power and beauty of the sea. From their first day on board the cadets began the 10-day training program to get permit to independent rigging work and aloft operations According to the Chief boatswain Mikhail Privalov the guys coped with yards bracing pretty well.
Now the ship is heading for the Canary Islands. The Krusenstern is to sail through one of the most difficult areas of the World Ocean – the North sea and the Biscay Bay. The vessel will pass the Little Belt and Great Belt, Kattegat and Skagerrak, which are located between the Scandinavian and Jutland peninsulas and connect the Baltic Sea with the North sea. This area has a large number of shoals, narrow channels with fairways, it requires highly professional crew.
The Kruzenshtern overcomes the route at a good speed, and this fact is one more proof of great experience of the watch navigators. Cadets who are lucky enough to keep watch in high-traffic waters get invaluable experience here.
The ship is due to arrive at the Spanish port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on December 25. This port was included into the route in connection with the Canary visit of Bellingshausen's expedition during their circumnavigation of the world on the sloops Vostok and Mirnyy.
