The Government of the Kaliningrad region discussed the round-the-world expedition of Rosrybolovstvo sailing fleet

On Friday, November 29, the working meeting of the Governor Anton Alikhanov and the Deputy Head of Federal Agency for Fishery Pyotr Savchuk took place.

The key topic of the meeting was the round-the-world expedition of the training sailing vessels of Rosrybolovstvo: the Kruzenshtern, Sedov and Pallada. The expedition is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian seafarers and the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

The Pallada already departed from Vladivostok on November 1. The Kruzenshtern and Sedov (which are in the operational management of the Kaliningrad State Technical University) will put to to sea on December 7.

"Fisheries industry is a traditional and significant direction of Kaliningrad regional economy. Executive authorities of the region in cooperation with the Federal Agency for Fisheries are considering the strategic development of this area. It is great that the port of Kaliningrad is the starting point of the expedition of two training sailing vessels of Rosrybolovstvo. The round-the-world expedition itself is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica," Anton Alikhanov stressed.

"In accordance with the instruction of the President of Russia, the year of Antarctica is being held in our country. In honor of the 200th anniversary of its discovery, we are conducting a unique expedition of our training sailing vessels. This is a global event. Under the sails of the peace we will circumnavigate the world, our mission is to remind the planet about the role of Russian pioneers and spirit of national Maritime traditions. Our cadets will plunge into the history of two hundred years ago, when Russian seafarers were exploring Antarctica. The next stage of the expedition dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Victory in the great Patriotic war is also of great importance," said Pyotr Savchuk.

The Deputy Head of Rosrybolovstvo stressed that the start of the expedition is an important event for the city of Kaliningrad and the whole region, it should become a real holiday for all the participants and spectators.

For reference:

South polar expedition made by two sloops - Vostok (commanderd by Thaddeus Bellingshausen) and Mirnyy (headed by Mikhail Lazarev) - in 1819 left Kronstadt and on January 28, 1820 discovered Antarctica. In 1821 the ships returned to Kronstadt. They had spent at sea 751 days and sailed more than 92 thousand km. In addition to Antarctica, the expedition discovered 29 Islands and a coral reef. Russian seafarers conducted scientific researches including oceanographic ones.

In 2019-2020 Rosrybolovstvo's sailing expedition is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica and the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War

the Sedov and the Pallada will carry out the circumnavigation, while the Kruzenshtern will take up a transatlantic crossing.  Joint maneuvering of all three sailing vessels in the closest to the Antarctic point of the Atlantic - off South Georgian islands' coast is going to be a culmination of the expedition.
