Pallada is sailing through the "roaring forties"
On the 3rd February, the STS Pallada entered the roaring forties on her way to Drake Strait. This place of the globe is one of the main challenges for all seafarers.
The Master of the Pallada, Nikolai Zorchenko gave the order to batten down the hatches and fix all the movable objects in advance. At night, the rolling and pitching started. Everyone on board heard the" roar" of the forties. The Roaring Forties are strong westerly winds found in the Southern Hemisphere, generally between the latitudes of 40 and 50 degrees. The strong west-to-east air currents are caused by the combination of air being displaced from the Equator towards the South Pole, the Earth's rotation, and the scarcity of landmasses to serve as windbreaks. The boundaries of the Roaring Forties are not consistent, and shift north or south depending on the season. Roughly speaking, this is a strip of 300 nautical miles along the Meridian and about 300-400 along the parallel that encircles Cape horn. Occasionally wind force here reaches 25-35 meters per second.
The Pallada will sail through this area under sail by tradition.
We hope that the wind speed should be about 18-20 meters per second. It is clear that the ship will experience pitching and rolling. The list here can be considerable. For sure, we have elaborated particular navigation tactics and arranged special training beforehand. The ship is well ballasted and well loaded. Our fuel and water tanks are almost full. Good stability of the ship is a cornerstone of success.
Arrival to the port of Ushuaia is scheduled for February 11.
